Catherine L. McCarthy, MD

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

She is a board-certified psychiatrist licensed in Virginia and North Carolina, with over two decades of private practice experience specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. After completing her medical education at the University of Virginia, residency at Duke University, and fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, she settled in Northern Virginia.

Recognized as a "Top Doctor" by Washingtonian Magazine every year since 2008, she is passionately involved in mental health advocacy and education. Her career highlights include serving on the Executive Council of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society of Greater Washington and holding elected positions in the American Psychiatric Association and Washington Psychiatric Society. Beyond clinical practice, she is passionate about global health since receiving a scholarship to study Human Rights and Medicine at Columbia University enabling her to practice medicine in developing countries.

Continued worldwide support of education and healthcare initiatives is a shared family mission which started with Dr. McCarthy's days at Columbia and her husband Kevin's service in the PeaceCorps.

During the pandemic, Dr. McCarthy thought innovatively to connect with patients, even holding appointments outdoors in a dedicated parking lot space. Now, she offers both in-office visits and flexible telemedicine options, ensuring accessibility and continuity of care. Her approach continues to emphasize holistic well-being, integrating exercise, meditation, and a love for nature into patient care.
